Australia years behind the US?

I have a friend who insists that "Australia is 50 years behind the United States" in terms of technology, equality and overall development.

Now, I didn't believe it from the get-go, but I did a moderate amount of research, and I believe that not only is Australia not behind America, but we may be ahead of the US in certain aspects. Apparently in like, 2008, we were ranked the forth most developed country in the world, in comparison to the US, which was #16.

I've also heard that South Australia was the first place in history where a woman could vote. NZ (IIRC) was the first country to allow it, but South Australia is apparently the first place in the world that allowed it.

I also have read other claims like the Bionic Ear, Aspirin and even Wifi originated in Australia, but I wanna do a bit more research.

So, is there any truth to is us being 50 (lmao) years behind America?

Nah. I think there's just an element of blanketing your own leader's views across the nation as a whole. Most Australians are not racist/homophobic bigots at all. Plus if you have microwave ovens and flatscreen tvs then you probably aren't technically backwards either. Even if your internet is a bit sucky.

No. That's silly.

However you can blame corporate favoritism for that rumor. For instances I just read on a tech blog recently that google is accused of favoritism towards the US, where it is based, against the EU.
The US has more innovators and more companies willing to invest in innovation than AUS does. If Samsung, Apple, Dell, Toshiba, and other companies ship their headquarters to Australia, then the tides will change. But that's not the case. So it's no wonder it looks like Australia is behind because nothing new is coming out of the big news headliner companies from there.

But 50 years behind? The only thing putting you 50 years back is Abbott's policies.

Some aspects you are, some you are not. It's not really a black and white issue.

BURN!!!

Technology wise, I don't think America has much that we don't.

I also think we are far more progressive towards the gay and transsexual community.

Of course not, because everything we come out with is sold overseas. You're probably our best customer.

And you hit the nail on the head with that one.

The LBGT community is treated poorly in America mainly due to religious pandering... Why is this not such an issue in many other countries that have the same religious peoples? America, land of religious freedom my a***. More like land of religious laws.

I dunno. I'm fairly sure that if you come out as gay in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia then far worse things will happen to you than if you did it in America.

Or Russia... But yes, I know things are worse for gay people in some other countries, but so many others with the same religious sects don't try passing their beliefs off as law of the land while our country was founded upon the proclamation that religious persecution is harmful... Yet we are harming our own citizens rights due to said religious BS.

America - Land of the hypocrites.

There are already gay people there, but they actually secure themselves, and don't let anyone know.

I don't think the US is that advanced compared to Australia.

Nah it brings a lot of people comfort and peace. I wouldn't want to take the warm feeling it gives some people away.

Those same people also shove it down people's throats.

Religion is no longer needed, as it was hundreds of years ago.

There's no need to be so militant about it. You should specify that you don't want religion to have any influence in Politics and Law. Outlawing it entirely would be, ironically enough, stifling personal freedom.
